Prophesy of Jesus. Why we believe he is the Messiah.

Name – Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua, meaning “the Lord saves”

Christ is Greek, Messiah is Hebrew, both mean “the anointed One”

Jews were looking for a soldier, someone like David.  They wanted someone to save them from their enemies forever.  But Jesus came to save both the Jews and Gentiles from the biggest enemy - sin, death and Satan.  That is why the Wise Men went to the Palace as they believed he would be a King or political figure.

In some Jewish prayer books it still has “I believe with a perfect heart that the Messiah will come; and although his coming be delayed, I still wait patiently for his speedy appearance.”

The Messiah was promised to the first Jew, Abraham. God told him that All Nations would be blessed through his descendants.

Reason for coming

To bring us back to God.  Isaiah 49 v 6

Calls himself “son of man” from Daniel 7 v 13.  He uses this as Jews thought the Messiah would be a political figure. So this allowed the disciples to reject their preconceived ideas of what the Messiah would do.  Matt 5 v 17

Had to die – Jewish sacrifice – Leviticus 17 v 11  Blood makes atonement

Had to suffer, then enter glory - Luke 24 v 25 – 27
